PURPOSE AND STRUCTURE OF THIS PUBLICATION

1.15 The main purpose of this publication is to provide users with an in-depth understanding of international merchandise trade statistics to aid in the use and interpretation of the statistics. A detailed understanding of the underlying conceptual framework, and of the sources and methods used to compile the statistics, should enable users to make better judgements about the economic significance, quality and accuracy of the statistics. To achieve this aim, this publication provides an updated account of the concepts, sources and methods used to compile Australia's international merchandise trade statistics.

1.16 While some users may only require a broad understanding of the conceptual framework and how the data are compiled, others will use the publication to obtain a detailed understanding of the conceptual framework and methods used to compile the statistics and how these differ from related statistics in the balance of payments.
